A lot of people have been amazed that we didn't want to find out the sex of the baby. Apparently, 76% of expectant mothers find out and 24% do not. Well we are among the minority (for once).
Reason #1, we figure it is the BEST kind of surprise you can receive in life.
Most, MOST, women (and men) will be happy if they get a boy or a girl. That is how we feel as well. Danny and I are in a dinner group and literally 4 of the 5 women in the group are either pregnant or just had a baby within the last 3 months. Martha had a boy in August, Debbie had a boy in October and now I'm due in March and Melissa is due in April. So either way, a boy or a girl would be amazing. (Boy, we could have little boy play group. Girl, we could promise our little girl to one of their boys for marriage! ;)
Reason #2, Labor and Delivery is hard.
I know it will be hard for me, even with the epidural. It is tiring and exhausting and long (for most). Why not be able to give yourself that little bit of a rush to help finish the labor when you find out it is a boy or a girl. Plus, if you don't know, you will be (I know I will be) more determined to find out what it is and push it out. Then when it's out, you will have a little more energy and "pick-me-up" knowing you have a new son or new daughter, to finish with the labor.
Reason #3, Running into the hall with news!
Danny has had this image in his head for a while now. After we deliver, he wants to be in the one that runs out into the hall (or waiting area) telling them "IT'S A BOY!" or "IT'S A GIRL!" We've decided it just doesn't have the same effect when you go "We had our boy!" or "We had our girl!". He's really excited about that part.
Reason #4, The can mistake the genders on the ultrasound.
Not only has everyone heard of stories of people who found out, bought all pink or blue stuff and then when the have the baby it is something completely opposite! Then the little one has to go home to a pink room in a pink and yellow car seat. We recently had a friend and their first ultrasound said they were having a girl and the technician was POSITIVE. The second ultrasound they said either it's a boy or it's the umbilical cord. Well, turned out, they had a boy. Of course they were excited and so were we all, but still, mistakes can happen. Luckily, they had some warning of you may have a boy.
Objection #1,People tell us, well it will be a surprise at 20 weeks or 40 weeks.
Yes that is true, but why not practice a little bit of patience and be even more surprised when you physically see the gender.
Objection #2, There are sales now! I can plan ahead and buy you things!
That will not be the last sale ever. There will always be more sales. You can still buy things, just not pink or blue things. You can save that fun shopping for when you know what they will look like in it. Most of the items you need as well are items you need if you have more babies, such as crib bedding, stroller, car seat, crib and swing. These items will last you even longer if you get the non-gender specific and it will save you money.
Objection #3, You can bond with the baby more if you know.
Bologna. That is what I have to say. You are going to bond with the baby no matter what. It is a human being growing inside you. It is going to be a humbling and spiritual experience as is. If you want to say it may enhance that, then that may be for you, but for me I am not going to love it more if it is a boy or a girl. Plus, what if you "bond" to a boy, but you have a girl. That really can throw someone through a loop.
Well, I'll step off my soap box now. This is not intend to degrade or down play those who do find out. This is my opinion for this particular pregnancy. Everyone is entitled to your own opinion. I will respect yours, but don't get mad at me for mine. (Yes, one person actually did get mad.) I think those who get mad are only mad that they themselves could not wait. But again, my opinion.
